We all have experienced soreness after exercising: burning quadriceps or triceps aches are only some example of the “good” pain you might experience after doing a good workout.
When exercising you creates micro-tears in your muscle that your body must repair and rebuild even stronger.[1]
The inflammation process that follows the workout has several steps: the blood flow increases to the area, the capillaries start “leaking” thanks to the inflammatory mediators, swelling happens and then the bloodstream slows down to allow chemical mediators and inflammatory cells to collect and respond to the stimulus. [2]
Our ‘Rally Rub’ speeds up the recovery by acting quickly on the inflammation process. Aescin (the major active ingredient in horse chestnut) reduces vascular permeability in inflamed tissues, thereby inhibits edema formation [3]. It also counteracts the release of pro-inflammatory mediators [4].
The Rally Rub contains Witch Hazel that is also a potent antinflamatory. In a recent study was found that the chemicals contained in the plant are able to inhibit the formation of some important inflammation mediators [5]. Strong antioxidant activity against superoxide (a highly reactive form of oxygen), which is released by several enzymes during the inflammatory process, may also play a role in witch hazel’s anti-inflammatory effects.
